Bacteriological Quality of Drinking Water Samples across Bangladesh

Anowar Khasru Parvez,Syeda Moriam Liza,Mahfuza Marzan,Alvee Ahmed and Md. hahedur Rahman

A total of 106 (tube well, deep well, surface and municipal supplied) water samples from 37 districts of Bangladesh were analyzed. Out of these, 80% samples were contaminated with coliform and 34% were with fecal coliform. Using MPN test, the highest coliform count was >1100 cfu/100 ml in surface water from pond. Among the bacterial isolates (n=86), 25 were confirmed as Escherichia coli and 20 as Enterobacter aerogenes. Multidrug resistant bacteria were determined by disk diffusion method. Multiple antibiotic resistant (MAR) index study was also carried out. A total of nine antibiotics were calculated and highest MAR index (0.777) was found for one E. coli and one E. aerogenes isolate. Cefotaxime (30 μg) was found to be most effective against these 45 isolates. Highest percentage of isolates (80%) was resistant against amoxicillin (10 μg) followed by nitrofurantoin (300 μg) (44.44%) and 71.11% were against at least two different groups of antibiotics. Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamases (ESBL) screening of these isolates with double disc diffusion synergy test (DDST) revealed 11 to be positive. Plasmid profiling of the isolates showed that most isolates (32/45) harbored at least one plasmid.
