Evaluation of Cytotoxic Effect of Punica granatum L. var spinosa extracts on Malignant Cell Line MCF-7 in vitro

In many countries of the world, cancer is one of the most serious health problems that affect the duration and quality of the individual’s life. Enormous efforts are invested to cope with this problem, but unfortunately limited success has ever been achieved with most of the therapeutic strategies. These efforts are usually complicated with the need for well experienced surgeons, lack of specificity and high cost, as well as being usually accompanied with a wide range of side effects. As the conventional therapeutic strategies fail to fulfill the major requirements for a successful cancer therapy, the use of naturally developed anticancer agents has evolved as an alternative safe, low-cost and convenient one. Therefore, the use of plant extracts with potential anticancer therapeutic effects might be particularly significant. Therefore, the current study, investigates the effect of plant extracts from pomegranate (Punica granatum L. var spinosa) on breast cancer cell line (MCF-7).

Results: showed concentration-dependent reduction in the final number of cancer cells in consequence to treatment with the aforementioned plant extract. The anticancer effects were evaluated and contributed to the cytotoxic effects (decreased number of live cells).

Conclusion: the activity of Punica granatum was good against cancer cell line .from this we concluded that PPE shows a better cancerous activity against the cancer as compare to PSE.
